Responsive Commerce App

Challenge

A Single page application in beta allowed auto insurance consumers compare brands and purchase. However, maintaining ~ 2200 lines of custom CSS was costly. Requirements for 1.0 were that the app become mobile-responsive, and accept agent private-label brands. Business rules were evolving rapidly.

Approach

I established a support matrix for screens small as 360px, and large as 4000px. Using Bootstrap, I re-created grids, and gradually replaced custom styling. I wrote EmberJS code for new features and interactions.

Result

The app is now accessible to mobile-only consumers. Agents enjoy the savings of increased touch-free sales. Development saves money with shorter approval loops and a free license for Bootstrap. Regression risks are reduced. Handoff to client went smoothly, as code employed well-understood standards. The client has less proprietary code to manage.
